Why Parents Should Actively Participate Into Speech-language Therapy Sessions

Updated: Aug 10

Speech-Language Pathologists must actively involve the parents in the treatment process of a child with communication difficulties to hasten and ensure positive treatment results. At Legacy Speech Services, parents are welcome to participate during therapy sessions because we believe the parents or caregivers can adequately implement the treatment path at home during daily activities to promote the child's speech and language abilities.

An Speech Language Pathologist knows how to address the child's communicative needs, what approach to use to achieve the targeted goals, and how to integrate the speech and language goals within a holistic view of the child's development. But parent's skills and knowledge are required because parents are the ones who share with the child most of the time in natural environments. Our goal at Legacy Speech Services is to train the parents to provide at home the scaffolding the child needs to grow their communication abilities, respecting the level of development the child is at. Parents are encouraged to use daily routines, semi-structured activities, and incidental moments as the best opportunities to promote the child's communication skills.

Therapists use demonstrations, practice, and feedback in any session to follow up on how the therapy is conducted at home. Parents love coming to the therapy sessions and being involved in their child's treatment at Legacy Speech Services.

You will see - it's fun!
