International Day of Peace: Effective Communication in Children Supports Healthier Relationships as Adults

Updated: Oct 15, 2024

43 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly established September 21 as “International Day of Peace” in an effort to cultivate the values of peace among the “… intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind.” Fostering peaceful ideals in children is more important than ever before if we hope for a future in which conflict resolution, understanding, and agreement can occur through non-violent means amidst conflicts within and among nations.

Today, Legacy recognizes the importance that regulated communication, expression, and emotions have in fostering a safe and just environment for the betterment of today’s tomorrow.

Language delays, speech disorders, autism and other pediatric conditions that affect children’s abilities to effectively express themselves can hinder their quality of life if not developed in a timely and appropriate way. By way of occupational and rehabilitation therapy interventions, our Legacy staff helps children reach their full potential by detecting early on any developmental issues and treating them accordingly through a family-centered approach. Interventions can include:

Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation prevents children from turning to unhealthy emotional responses, such as aggression or physical frustration, to express themselves well and communicate effectively with others. In helping children reach their full potential, Legacy offers services centered around Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) aimed at helping children identify and mitigate negative thought patterns that can lead to unhealthy and reactive behaviors towards themselves and others.

Communication and Social Skills

Creating and maintaining healthy relationships are at the center of leading a healthy, purposeful, and joyful life. To set the precedent for cultivating strong connections later in life, Legacy therapists tailor services in which children and adolescents are supported in learning essential communication skills, such as listening, understanding, and expressing themselves effectively. These activities include active listening and role-playing, among others. To learn more about Legacy’s services, click here.

Aligning Values Towards a Healthier Future

18 years after establishing Peace Day, the UN General Assembly outlined the values required for a culture of peace, which includes “…. the promotion of non-violence through education, dialogue and cooperation; commitment to peaceful settlement of conflicts…”. In alignment with today’s message, Legacy’s values of Compassion, Teamwork,

Respect, Empathy, and Inclusivity aims to foster the education and support for children and adolescents so they can move forward with the necessary skills to lead a bright life, and subsequently, foster peace-enabling environments for generations to come.
